Lenten Services

Hampshire Colony Congregational Church in Princeton will host Lenten music, meditations and luncheons Wednesdays, Feb. 21, through March 24, at the church. Meditations will be from 12:10 to 12:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary and the luncheon will be served in the Fellowship Hall. Music entertainment will be provided each week. A free-will donation will be accepted. The church is handicapped accessible.

Open Table

 The next Open Table supper at the Walnut United Methodist Church will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the church. The menu will be lasagna, salad and dessert. There will be a gluten free lasagna also for those who are on a gluten free diet (limited quantities).

The Open Table is a free meal prepared and provided as a gift from the Walnut United Methodist Church to the Walnut community. There is ample parking by the Jackson Street entrance. For those who need it, there is an elevator on the east side of the building (facing the fire station). Meals are served on the third Wednesday of each month. The church hopes to serve people of all ages and all walks of life. You do not need to be a member of the WUMC. For more information, call the church at 815-379-2494.

Father's Daughters Dance

The Spring Valley Boosters will present “A Trip Around the World,” a father-daughter dance on Saturday, Feb. 24. The dance will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at in the John F. Kennedy School gym in Spring Valley. The night includes dancing, a wrist corsage and photo. Tickets are $25 per couple, $5 per additional guest. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door. Garth Brooks Tribute

Ever wanted to see Garth Brooks but you didn’t have the opportunity? Bureau County Fair is going to give you a chance to see the next best thing to going to a Garth show. 

Brian Shartzer and the Ropin’ the Wind Band will perform at the Bureau County Fairgrounds on Saturday, Feb 24. Shartzer is a Garth Brooks tribute musician. He will be performing favorite hits like “The Dance,” “The Thunder Rolls,” “American Honky Tonk Bar Association” and “Friends in Low Places.” 

Shartzer is a recording artist at Shock City Studios in St. Louis. Together with the Ropin’ the Wind Band he is considered the closest thing to an actual Garth Brooks show. The show will begin at 6 p.m. in the exhibit halls at the Bureau County Fairgrounds, 811 W. Peru St. in Princeton. There will even be a dance floor so wear your best cowboy boots to swing the night away. 

Tickets are $15. Tickets will also enter you in a drawing to win front row tickets for this summer’s concert during the Bureau County Fair on Thursday, Aug. 23. Also included in the ticket price will be appetizers and a dessert bar. There will be a cash bar. The building is handicap accessible. Tickets are available in advance by mailing a request to Bureau County Fairgrounds, P.O. Box 238, Princeton, IL 61356 or by calling 815-303-8247; tickets will also be available at the door the night of the show.

Lions Club drawdown / dance

“Dreaming of the Green,” a drawdown/dance hosted by the Princeton Lions Club, will be held Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Princeton Elks Lodge. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m., the drawdown will begin at 7 p.m. and music will start at 8:30 p.m. The event will feature Rodeo Drive, cash prizes totaling more than $1,000, an auction, silent auction, 50/50, tip boards and door prizes. Flags of Freedom Fundraiser

Flags of Freedom committee is holding the second annual "Rockin the Runway" event at Wise Guys.  This event is held to raise funds to support the cost of the Flags located at Route 26 and Interstate 80.

Catchable Trout Program

Catchable Trout Program: The Hennepin Canal is one of that state parks that participates in the state's "Catchable Trout" program.  Several hundred pounds of trout are released into the lagoon outside the visitor's center, which remains netted off for about a month.  This program is run twice a year: the 1st Saturday in April and the 3rd Saturday in October.

A ‘90s Trivia Night fundraiser to benefit special education in Princeton, Bureau Valley and Malden schools, will be held Saturday, April 7, at the Princeton Moose Lodge. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. and trivia will start at 6 p.m. The cost is $20 a person with six people per team. Pizza will be available for purchase. A Night to Remember, a prom for special needs high school age and up, will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. April 14 at the Bureau County Metro Center in Princeton. At 5:45 p.m. there will be a red carpet event as prom goers enter. Family and friends are invited to line the red carpet and cheer them on at the main entrance of the Metro Center, weather permitting.

The Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library in Spring Valley will host juggler and stilt-walker Jason Kollum at 6:00 p.m. in the children’s library. The first part of the program Jason performs for the audience, but the last part of the show is where is gives the children a chance to learn how to juggle.
